Shaving

shaving

Shaving is still the most common method of removing unwanted hair by men and women. The two most common problems associated with it is razor burn and ingrown hairs, which can become infected (common with curly hair where the hair can turn back into the skin).
Shaving may cause bumps on your skin because the larger, blunt edges of hair try to push through the smaller follicle openings, where usually the fine tips of hair would grow through. Skin rashes may also result from shaving due to pieces of a shaved hair falling back into a follicle.

Razor induced irritation can be eliminated by:

  • keeping the skin loose (not taut)
  • do not shave over the same area multiple times
  • using mild, fragrance-free, antibacterial cleansers

For Best Shaving Results

Try not to shave everyday and do not shave over the same area multiple times. Apply a good shaving cream before shaving to provide a protective barrier and improve razor glide – a glycerin based shaving cream is best for a close and comfortable shave. Always try to generate a rich, warm lather.  It is important to use hot water while shaving to soften the hair and open pores. For the best results, shave right after or during a hot shower.
Adding 1-2 drops of 100% tea tree oil to shaving foam is wonderful for your skin. To lessen irritation, wait until the end of your shower to shave.  The steam softens hairs for smother results. There are excellent products in the market now that can make shaving a very pleasant experience.shaving
To start, ensure your razor is clean and the blade is sharp. Dip your razor in hot water to rinse off the hair. Using gentle pressure, start shaving with the grain of your hair growth. Notice that the hair may grow in different directions. For a closer shave, re-lather and shave gently against the grain.
When done, moisturize. Be sure to use a toner or an after shaving balm – one formulated with Shea butter and jojoba oil works really well for me. Using a good after shaving moisturizer can make all the difference between a bumpy, rough looking skin, and a soft, supple one.
If you cut yourself shaving, use a styptic pencil (made primarily of alum) or an alum block to dab on the affected area to stop the blood flow. Alum has astringent properties (it closes pores), and has been used by men for years to help heal shaving nicks. There are a couple of other products on the market to heal shaving cuts, including roll-on products that contain natural ingredients such as aloe.

What are the Pros and Cons of Shaving?

Pros

  • fast
  • exfoliates your skin
  • inexpensive
  • painless
  • convenient

Cons

  • hair may grow back more stubbly in 1 – 4 days
  • when shaving bothersome hair, the fine vellus (peach fuzz) may also be removed causing a potentially bigger problem
  • may cause razor burns and ingrown hairs
While its effects are short-lived, the fastest, most convenient method of hair removal is still shaving.
